Dental Implants

Dental implant treatments

Dental implant restorations can restore the aesthetic, phonetic and masticatory function of the mouth, when someone has lost one, several or all of his teeth. They are made of a titanium alloy, zirconium or a polymer material with dimensions similar to the roots of the natural tooth. With the help of dental implants we can nowadays restore cases that were previously considered unsolved.

DENTAL IMPLANT TREATMENTS ARE DIVIDED INTO THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

1)   CLINICAL EXAMINATIONhome gallery-22

At the first appointment the detailed medical and dental history of the patient along with an extra and intraoral examination and impression of the upper and lower jaw are being collected. Furthermore, a panoramic radiograph (OPG) and possibly a CT-scan or volumetric (CT) scan of the jaws may be required.
After completing this first step, recommendations on a variety of treatment plans will be presented to the patient. Finally, the treatment that meets the patients’ needs will be discussed and co-decided.

2)   SURGICAL PHASE

The surgical placement of dental implants is a patient-friendly procedure conducted at the private practice and usually performed while under local anesthesia. Should the patient decide to get general anesthesia or sedation, the procedure will take place in a specially designed surgery at a private hospital. Our team performs such procedures at the private hospitals Ygeia and Mediterraneo.
We place the dental implants at the preplanned spaces on the patients’ jaws. There is a waiting period of approximately 3-4 months until complete osseointegration, meaning the full and complete compound of the implant to the bone. We often need to use bone and tissue grafts and guided bone and tissue regeneration membranes so as to place the implants in prosthetic-wise positions in order to gain a better esthetic, functional and phonetic result.

After the surgery painkillers and antibiotics are being prescribed to the patient, in order to minimize the pain and possible swelling.

3)   OSSEOINTEGRATION PHASEhome gallery-4

Nowadays, we are able to offer temporary restorations to our patients, either by using the implants we just inserted (see: Immediate implant loading) or by using the remaining teeth of the patient during the phase of osseointegration. With temporary restorations, already at this stage of treatment, we are able -in this phase of the recovery- to control the masticatory, phonetic and aesthetic functions that we designed and apply corrections if needed.

IMMEDIATE IMPLANT LOADING
Immediate implant loading depends on the quantity and quality of the bone of the jaw, the number and spreading of implants. So, if we place a specific number of implants with good primary stability, they can be restored with a temporary prosthesis and in some cases it is possible to insert the final restoration immediately after the surgical placement of implants.
Generally, temporary restorations are being used in aesthetically sensitive areas (front teeth in the upper jaw) having as purpose to sculpture of the soft tissue (gums). Final restorations used for the posterior teeth or the entire jaw. Usually the final restorations are being adjusted after the phase of osseointegration of the implants.
So, we move on safely towards the prosthetic phase providing the patient with temporary teeth throughout the treatment.

4) PROSTHETIC PHASEhome gallery-3

This is the phase of the construction of the permanent prosthetic restoration. At this stage final impressions will be taken so as to construct the permanent restoration with the help of our dental technician. A metal or zirconium framework will be initially produced and after a successful try-in ,all data (aesthetic, phonetic and masticatory) will pass from the provisional to the final restoration of porcelain. The final try-in of the restoration follows. After any needed corrections, the final restoration is ready to be placed in the mouth of the patient.
